History of Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon

Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon is named after one of the most influential figures in modern American whiskey. Elmer Tandy Lee helped transform Buffalo Trace’s predecessor distillery through engineering, production leadership, and master-distilling expertise before lending his name to one of Kentucky’s most recognized single-barrel bourbons.

ELMER T. LEE

Elmer T. Lee was a Kentucky-born distiller whose career helped shape modern American bourbon. Born in 1919 near Peaks Mill, Franklin County, he served as a radar bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II before studying engineering at the University of Kentucky. In 1949, he joined the George T. Stagg Distillery (now Buffalo Trace Distillery) as a maintenance engineer and later became plant superintendent and plant manager. Lee retired in 1985 but continued serving as a respected ambassador and Master Distiller Emeritus. He is best remembered for helping introduce Blanton’s, widely recognized as the first modern premium single-barrel bourbon, and for the Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon named in his honor. He died in 2013, leaving a lasting legacy through the whiskey brands, techniques, and generations of bourbon drinkers influenced by his work.

Whiskey Shopping FAQs

What types of whiskey can I find here?

Our collection includes bourbon, rye whiskey, single-barrel expressions, barrel-proof bottles, kosher-certified whiskey, limited releases, and collectible American spirits.

Do you sell rare bourbon?

We feature selected rare, allocated, commemorative, and limited-edition bourbon and rye whiskey. Availability can vary by release and location.

What is the difference between bourbon and rye whiskey?

Bourbon is primarily corn-based, while rye whiskey uses at least 51% rye in its mash bill under U.S. standards. Bourbon commonly emphasizes sweetness, vanilla, and caramel, while rye often brings more pepper, citrus, herbal notes, and spice.

How should I choose a bottle?

Consider the whiskey’s proof, age, mash bill, tasting notes, bottle size, intended use, and budget. A lower-proof bottle may be easier for casual sipping, while high-proof whiskey suits drinkers who prefer intensity or want to dilute a pour gradually.

Can I buy whiskey online?

Online alcohol sales and delivery depend on local laws, retailer licensing, shipping restrictions, and customer age verification. Check the applicable rules and the store’s delivery policy before ordering.
